Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation it normally appears as large dark patches on the face although other parts of the body can also be affected, it can be caused by the overproduction of melanin, sun exposure, ultraviolet light, the use of contraceptives, genetics, or during and after pregnancy. Melasma is more common in women, according to studies melasma affects 90% of women and only 10% of men.<\/p>\n

Types of Melasma

There are three types:<\/p>\n

1. <\/span>Epidermal melasma that affects the top layer of skin and the hyperpigmentation is brown with well-defined borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

2. <\/span>Dermal melasma that affects the deeper dermal layers of the skin and is characterized by blue-gray patches.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

3. <\/span>Mixed melasma (a combination of epidermal and dermal) it shows as a brown-gray pigment.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to studies, dermal and mixed melasma are the most difficult types to treat.<\/p>\n
